Cattle operating line & seasonal cash flow

Follow one purchased cattle cohort through twelve monthly cash budgets, borrowing needs, interest and sale repayment. Keep the credit ceiling and cash reserve visible.

Monthly operating cash plan

Open each month to enter cash costs and other receipts. The cohort purchase, sale and operating-line interest are added separately. Use cash debt payments, not depreciation; avoid counting the same payment twice.

YOUR DECISION, IN NUMBERS

METHOD 2026-10-23.4
Peak credit need before the limit$128,826
Entered credit limit$150,000
Largest cash / reserve shortfall$0
Operating debt after month 12$0
Cash after month 12$25,012
Interest with the entered limit$7,238
Interest if the cash plan is fully funded$7,238
Entered-limit interest plus line fee$7,738
Modeled cattle sale receipts$146,250
Largest negative-cash payment gap$0

Illustrative cash budgeting for a single purchased cohort, not profit, lender eligibility, a current cattle price or an offer. Enter fewer head sold for expected losses; no biological growth, insurance, tax, depreciation or inventory value is inferred. Include other cash costs and debt service yourself, without double counting. Negative cash or reserve shortfalls mean the plan is not fully funded. Intramonth dates, lender daily interest, borrowing-base rules, commitment fees, maturity and renewal terms can differ.

A SMALL CHANGE / A DIFFERENT VIEW

Current scenario$128,826
Changed assumption$129,590

One assumption changes; everything else stays the same. This is a stress scenario, not a forecast.

READ THE RESULT

What the numbers are telling you.

  1. The peak-credit-need figure uses a separate unlimited-line pass; it is not an approved credit limit.
  2. Spending comes before month-end receipts. A shortfall can occur even in a month with strong sales.
  3. The cash plan is not profit. Other debt principal and owner withdrawals use cash; depreciation is not a cash payment.
A GOOD QUESTION

Does a positive year-end cash balance mean the year was fully funded?

No. Review the largest reserve shortfall and negative-cash payment gap as well as every month. The capped line can leave earlier bills unfunded even if later sales restore cash.

OPEN METHODS / BETTER QUESTIONS

Understand what the number means.

The calculation

Cattle dollars = head × pounds per head ÷ 100 × dollars per hundredweight. Over months 1–12, cash spending and initial line draws occur at the start; receipts, interest-funding draws and surplus repayments occur at the end. Monthly interest = (opening debt + start draw) × annual nominal rate ÷ 12. The entered line caps every draw. A separate unlimited-line pass reports peak credit need. Cash above the chosen reserve repays the operating line.
